of these signatures say the same thing. they both belong to treasury secretary tim geithner, who by virtue of being treasury secretary is also the guy who gets to sign our money. when mr. geithner became treasury secretary, he changed his signature. he changed it from the rather lovely loop de loops on the left to the fifth grader's cursive timothy f. geithner you see on the right. here he is explaining why. >> i think on the dollar bill i had to write something that people could read my name. i didn't try for elegance. i just tried for elegance. >> because mrs. quigley, the first grade writing teach worry have given me an "f" on that. >> i took third grade in new delhi, india. >> whether it is foreign penmanship instruction or something weirder, tim geithner's changed signature never got nearly the attention that his successor's signature received. all of the media got fixated on a signature that is loopier than tim geithner's original signature. this is jack lew. all signs point to president obama say i knowing him to replace tim geithner. and if he is nominated and confirmed, that will mean that

to chuck hagel. no change in diversity there. cia director from petraeus to john brennan, no change. tim geithner to jack lou, no change there. john kerry is nominated to replace secretary of state hillary clinton, that's one less woman, the possible replacement with ashton carter, one less minority. and head of the epa lisa jackson, the first black woman to hold that title, her replacement is unknown. of hundreds of senior appoint ees and nominees, 48% were minority or women according to the national journal. and 13 out of 22 of his first cabinet members were diverse. that's a record. but it's not only about ethnicity and gender, the president could potentially nominate the first openly gay cabinet member. he could choose more with business executive experience. his team head count dropped 25% on that measure. age diversity is an issue too. right now two-thirds of obama's team are baby boomers. history shows cabinet choices have lasting effects, madeleine albright's nomination was followed by 15 years of diverse secretaries of state. farther back, president lincoln's cabinet strategy as

is treasury secretary tim geithner and a trillion dollar coin. the plan revolves around a loophole in which the coinage act which allows the treasury secretary to issue a platinum coin at any denomination he want so geithner could order a $1 trillion coin mint and use the coin to buy back debt from the fed, pulling us away from the debt ceiling and avoiding another showdown with republicans. this isn't some pie in the sky plan devised by economic wonks or sci-fi fans, it actually has supporters in congress. specifically new york democratic congressman jerry nadler who has proposed bringing the idea to the floor to use as a bargaining chip saying it sounds silly but it is legal and it would normally not be proper to consider such a thing except when you're faced with blackmail to destroy the country's economy, you have to consider things. well put. joining me now is our own platinum panel starring professor at brown university and current contributor trisha rose, forbes contributor rick unger and editor at-large for "huffington post," nick. thank you all for joining us tonight. there is a lo

's much rumored pick to succeed treasury secretary tim geithner. the odds on favorite jack liew. he would expect to be confirmed, but some in the business community, they're concerned, because he has little market or business experience. >>> and an eerie twist here in the search for that missing plane carrying fashion icon vittorio missoni. his wife and five others, a plane vanished friday off the coast of venezuela. but according to these new reports, the son of one of the men on board got a text message sunday night that said and i'm quoting this text, call now, we are reachable. the italian telephone company confirmed the message was sent but couldn't verify when it was written. crews continue the search off the country's coast. >>> in seaside heights, new jersey, look at this. look at this closely with me. this is that roller coaster and you see this man, he climbed to the tip-top of it, to call attention to the recovery from superstorm sandy or the lack thereof. there he is, scaling the same coaster chris christie said he vacationed at, took his kids to. the structure swept into the

tim geithner. >> hillary clinton is leaving. john kerry coming in. before she goes, she will testify on the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. >> reporter: that's right. the white house fully expects that hillary will testify on benghazi before she leaves as secretary of state, doing something republicans have been demanding for a long time. >> jon karl, thanks very much. >>> now, to the fire that broke out on a boeing dreamliner at logan international airport in boston, right after passengers got off that jet. the japan airlines 787 was parked at the gate. no one was injured. but the fire was the latest in a string of incidents for the high-tech new jetliner. abc's jim avila is in washington with the latest. jim, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. few things are as frightening as smoke on an airplane. but fortunately, in this case, the only real damage was done to the reputation of boeing's new dreamliner airplane. firefighters at boston's logan field, dousing smoke on the plane of the future, boeing's 787 dreamliner. a plane made mostly of carbon fiber, a fancy na

will be replaced by who knows. tim geithner is out. he'll be replaced by a guy, jack lew, the guy who, if you've been watching the tv over the last day or so, jack lew is the guy who signs his name with what surely looks like a slinky. >>brian: front page "where are the women?" they take a picture and talk about the cabinet of the administration. all the women are being replaced by men. white men too on top of that. let me show you a picture in "the new york times." all we see is valerie jar rhett's leg -- valerie jarrett's leg. >>steve: on december 29 that is the pr-z meeting with ten guys and they're talking about the fiscal cliff. >>brian: could they back up a little. >>gretchen: this is a picture they released the day after, i believe. and you can see valerie jarrett front and center facing the president. then there are two other women who are in the photos. was it a reaction to that original picture? brian, you bring up a good point that there are no minorities -- there's one, i think, in that original picture. it is an interesting discussion because there was so much made in this last p

considered failures. tim geithner's tenure has been controversial but i think broadly speaking what he did to write the financial system will be considered a tremendous achievement in the annals of economic policy-making. but again, they are in something of a rut, i think, in their economic policy-making at this point, and particularly in their approach to dealing with republicans. a lot of that, i'd say frankly the bulk of that blame falls on the house republicans and john boehner. but it's nevertheless a case that they just put somebody into the treasury department who they intend to have lead a lot of their budget battles who john boehner at this point essentially refuses to work with. during the 2011 negotiations, they said boehner and the republicans said we just don't want to deal with lew anymore. we don't feel we can get him to say yes to us. now, to some degree that might be because lew is reflecting the will of the president, but i just think there's a kind of a siege mentality a little bit at the white house that's showing up in their appointments, which is understandable, but i
